FAQ
Does it cost anything?
No. StepTrail is free to use.
Which browsers work?
Recording: Chrome and Edge. Replay: Chromium.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Recordings stay on your machine unless you attach them somewhere yourself or use --jira.
Are passwords recorded?
No. Password fields and fields with secret-like names are stored as ***. See Sessions and secrets.
Can an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT use StepTrail?
Local assistants that support MCP, such as Claude Code and Claude Desktop, can: StepTrail ships a connector (node bin/mcp.js) with tools to look up what it knows, build a recording from steps and make the Playwright test. If you switch it on, it can also run a replay, only against addresses you list. ChatGPT needs a server on the internet, which is planned. See Use StepTrail from an AI assistant.
Does StepTrail remember my system, and does that store personal data?
Yes, if you ask it to: replay with --memory shop learns the screens, elements and proven locators of a system and uses them to heal broken steps. It stores structure only, in plain files in your project: no typed values, cookies, screenshots or real host names, and nothing that looks personal. See Screen memory.
Can it tell me which page is slow?
Yes. Every replay rates each page it visits for speed (Good, Needs improvement or Poor), lists the worst first and says what stood out, such as a slow server or a huge file. It measures from one machine, so use --repeat for steadier numbers. See Page speed.
Does it test my site's security?
Partly. Every replay passively checks the pages it visits for common weaknesses such as missing security headers and risky cookies, and explains how to fix each one. It sends no extra requests and is not a penetration test. See Security checks.
Can it run on BrowserStack?
Not yet.
Does it work with Selenium or Cypress?
Script generation supports one format today.
